Blackouts possible as power use soars in summer: official

The ongoing hot weather conditions in Vietnam could spike power usage and cause a shortage, despite a 10.6 percent rise in total electricity output, an official says.

There is sufficient power supply for the economy now, but blackouts might still happen during hot days, said Dinh The Phuc, Deputy Director of the Electricity Regulatory Department.

“Consumption could exceed supply at some places, but generally, there should be enough electricity,” he was quoted as saying by the VnExpress news website.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, power plants in the country have been operating in a stable manner. Total power output reached 31.9 billion kilowatt-hours in the first four months, up 10.6 percent from the same period last year.

Government officials had earlier said power cuts are unlikely to happen as many companies have scaled down production due to tough economic conditions in the first months of the year.

Vietnam is facing an unexpected heat wave, with the temperatures hitting 42 degrees Celsius in some cities.
