Vietnam retail sales rise 22 pct in Jan

Vietnam’s retail sales rose 22 percent in January from a year ago, the government said in a report Wednesday, though the 17.27 percent inflation meant the Tet market was less robust than in past years.

Sales topped VND191 trillion (US$9.2 billion) during the month, up 3.2 percent over December.

There was an ample supply of goods while demand was weaker than usual, prompting many businesses to offer discounts, according to the report.

Prices were quite stable, with the exception of some food products that saw increases of 10 to 15 percent.

The government called on market management authorities to stabilize prices after Tet, saying priority should be given to monitoring fuel retailers and price listings at markets and shopping malls.
